What is an Endodontist?
An endodontist is the dental specialist concerned with the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the human dental pulp or the nerve of the tooth. In other words Endodontists are root canal specialists. The Endodontist may perform simple to difficult root canal treatments or other types of surgical root procedure. At Witzmani Dental Care in Elmhurst Queens, New York, our goal is to make your experience with us to be comfortable and pleasant as possible. So, if your tooth or its root is damaged by trauma, you will typically experience pain and increased sensitivity in that tooth. Having frequent pain when you bite down is often a sign that your tooth may need a root canal. When a cavity progresses to the point that it involves the pulp (the chamber in the tooth containing the nerve and blood vessels), a root canal may be necessary instead of extracting the tooth. This also treats potential infections and dental abscesses.
Diagnosing Tooth Pain
If you experience dental pain, your general dentist will probably take an X-ray and evaluate for any pathology. If there is a suspicion of a fracture or pulpitis (inflammation on the pulpal tissue in a tooth), your endodontist will further evaluate your tooth, using a variety of methods. If you will need root canal treatment, your endodontist will discuss this with you. The endodontist will explain to do what is going to happen.

Difference Between Endodontic and Oral Surgeon
Oral Surgeons are required to complete additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. Our surgeons have the training to perform a wide variety of procedures relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions including dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, damaged tooth extractions, bone grafting, oral pathology, obstructive sleep apnea
In addition to four years of dental school, endodontists received three more years of advanced education. All dentists have been trained in diagnosis and endodontic therapy, however some teeth, can be especially difficult to diagnose and treat. This is where our Endodontic comes into play. We have one of the best Endodontic on staff. Our Doctors study a variety of the latest proven techniques and procedures for root canal treatments.
